6 DIY & Natural Ways to Keep Bugs Away
Don’t let summer insects get you down – especially when there are so many DIY – and natural – ways to keep them away. Try these 6 tips to stay bite-free.
Plant lots of marigolds, ageratum or bee balm in your garden or deck planters to ward off mosquitoes. Basil, catnip and garlic are other plants insects don’t like so place them in your garden or pots too.
With the right ingredients, home made repellents are even more effective than DEET. Add 1/4 teaspoon lemon eucalyptus oil plus 1/8 teaspoon each of geranium and lavender oils to 8 oz of almond oil. Rub or spray on skin before going out.
Bugs don’t like the odor of certain foods – like garlic or onions. Of course, neither do your friends but eating modest amounts still help. Drinking 1 T apple cider vinegar 3 times a day is another option. Or try adding a 1 T of vanilla to one cup of water. Drink it daily – or splash yourself with before going outdoors.
Take a B1 tablet. There’s some evidence that it will repel mosquitoes – plus flies and gnats.
Add essential oils (about 10-15 drops per ounce) to your shower and hand soap. Lavender, eucalyptus, lemon balm and royal geranium are all good choices. Add to unscented soaps or bump up the volume of soaps with these fragrances.
If added scents don’t appeal to you, go scentless – and hopefully unnoticed – since insects are attracted to many fragrances we use. That means unscented deodorant, laundry products, soaps, hair products or make-up – and of course, no perfume.
