Food Reviews: Grocery Business Review 2010
The chain I visit the most often is Giant Eagle. They have very nice advertised specials in their weekly ads, plus when I am shopping I will often come across in-store specials. It is also one stop shopping as far as prescriptions go, since three members of my family have a lot of medical issues. The lines are never long, the service is great and friendly, and the prices are very competitive. There is a Wal*Mart right across the street, and sometimes they will have lower prices (not to mention price matching) but they don’t offer gas perks, so we do the majority of our shopping at Giant Eagle, which helps us with discount gas prices as well.

We have typically shopped at shoppers because even though Safeway and Giant both have bonus cards their prices are much higher. The quality and freshness of the meat is really good. Their deli meat is also very fresh and they offer brands that we enjoy. In the hot prepared food area their is no comparison between their hot food and the other grocery stores. The cashiers are also very friendly. Most of them have worked for the store for years so even if they are not friends they are familiar when you go in there to shop. As with other stores there are times when the lines get really long but they have added self checkouts that provide five or six additional registers when they are busy or at night when they only have one or two registers open.

Whole Foods is one of my favorite grocery store chains. Their 365 house brand products are usually of excellent quality and a great value. I especially like their peanut butter which does not have the added sugar of many supermarket brands that cost just as much. Their soy milk is also excellent and much cheaper than most national brands. Additional strengths are their produce selection and bakery goods. With so many plant stores closing, I also appreciate being able to buy healthy plants and fresh flowes while getting groceries. The staff is usually very friendly and helpful. The Safeway and Giant stores in Washington DC have terrible produce and seem to devote a lot of space to bad frozen food. The staff usually seem pleasant but I very rarely shop at them.

I love Whole Foods. It totally rocks my world. They have a great selection of healthy and unique foods, and the staff, at least where I go, is crazy friendly. I started going there after I switched to being a vegan, and discovered the benefits of organically grown produce, which Whole foods has in abundance. They also have cool stuff you can’t find anywhere else, like aloe leaves and burdock root and all kinds of fun stuff. And their vegan food selection is awesome too, I think I would die without Vegenaise! I like that their staff is so friendly and helpful, always asking if you are doing OK, always saying hi to my son, nice people make such a big difference. And my son likes to go and will actually behave so because of all the free samples they offer throughout the store. I have to drive about a half an hour out of my way to get to the closest Whole Foods location, but with some advanced planning, it is totally worth it.

My favorite grocery store chain is Krogers. Kroger’s really has some good buys, better than other stores. Store is always clean and very organized. I never have to wait in line very long. The overall shopping experience it great. I aslo enjoy the rewards I get, like cheaper gas for instant. The Kroger store brands are always just as good as the name brand. I will keep on Krogering.

Mostly I visit Wal-Mart to buy everything including grocery. I really like it, but not all Wal-Marts have a fresh fruits and vegetables. When they have it, the quality is good. And no, it does not come from China. And it’s true that Wal-Mart is cheap. I don’t expect to get a better price at my local grocery store. Jelly beans for example, I’ve bought them at Wal-Mart but also elsewhere. But I keep coming back to Wal-Mart. When I don’t like to drive that far, I go to Brookshire’s.

One of my favorite grocery stores is Trader Joe’s. I love the atmosphere, the friendliness of the staff and variety of the foods. There are items in this store that I had never heard of and I am a foodie. The produce is always fresh, there is a great assortment of cheeses and high quality meat. The frozen food section is fanatastic. There are a lot of ethnic choices, full meals, great desserts and a wide assortment of vegetable mixtures. There is alway hot coffee for everybody and some sample of an unusual food. Interesting bread selection and whole grain cereals are available. However, you can’t depend on doing all your shopping for dinner here. At least my store is limited on the ordinary stuff. If your pantry is empty you won’t be able to buy everything you need here.I love the unusual stuff but hate having to stop at another store just to get staples.

Publix has got to be my favorite grocery store. The employees are very friendly, the food in every department is always fresh. The shopping carts are big, the isles are roomy. The bakery is to die for. The Butcher will cut any meat to your specifications if the display case does not have what you need. People always say that Publix seems a little too expensive, but when you consider the quality, cleanliness, and super friendliness of the whole experience – who really cares if your bill comes out to maybe, five dollars more than the other stores.Irregardless, What other store could you buy freshly chopped everything (onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, nuts, etc.)? – all you gotta do is stroll down through the vegetable section.Did I mention the fast and friendly Pharmacist?
Review: Grocery Food Market Critique 2010
There is a medium-sized Midwestern chain of stores called Meijer. Meijer sells just about everything like Wal-Mart, it’s just not as big, nor is the selection as big, however, the quality of what you will get there is a step up from Wal-Mart. As far as their grocery section goes: it’s great! The produce section has several fresh (and they do their best to buy from local sources) varieties of produce – fresh radishes, fruits, melons, and artichokes. They have a wonderful cheese section too, including Camabert, Gouda, Limberger, Blue, Goat, Brie and I could go on and on. Meijers’ stocks several kinds of vendor bread including French, and bagels; although I must admit, I was dismayed when they removed their bakery – their fresh donuts and coffee couldn’t be matched. Meijers’ also carries all of the name brand frozen products including pizzas, dinner entrĂ©s, and desserts. Their prices are usually a couple of cents lower than Wal-Mart, however, that is icing on the cake. Unlike Wal-Mart, you can always find at least one employee who will go out of their way to help you! I know this because over Christmas I wanted to buy some good quality boxed chocolates, and this grocery manager named Steven, stopped his work, and walked me right over to the chocolates, which by the way was at least 250 feet from where he was working!Meijer has a wide dairy aisle, and their eggs are the closest thing to fresh that I could ask for, short of building my own coop. They make it a point to carry the top brands there too, and yes, that includes Land O’ Lakes.Meijer has a wonderful seafood section with live lobsters, I have purchased their lobsters three different times last year, and they were absolutely perfect. They have a nice variety of frozen seafood as well including cod, haddock, shrimp, prawns, and calamari. The aisles are clean, well-stocked, and well-lit. They seem to make it a point to keep the customer as happy as possible, and they do it really well. The only rough part of the shopping experience is sometimes, there just isn’t enough cashiers at the front of the store, and if you come during a holiday weekend – ahem, Christmas, be prepared to wait your turn in line.

I’ve lived all around the country and, after a lot of consumer experience with different chains and a brief stint working in a corporate headquarters, I have a favorite chain. It’s Fred Meyer, which originated in the Pacific Northwest (Portland, Oregon, I think). The experience of shopping at Freddie’s comes with a sort of legend attached to Fred Meyer himself. Meyer was community-minded, organizing and contributing to various civic Portland projects, and also a proponent of thrift and self-reliance. The stores tend to carry an amazing array of merchandise, from sporting goods to shoes to coffee stands to jewelry — so much, you worry about their inventory costs. The prices are always appropriate, the service is good, and there’s an obvious discpline at work. There’s none of the low-light and wood-floor luxury that makes me think of Safeway, and that seems false to me. Freddy gets my business.
