Should You Sacrifice Your Style During a Recession?
Most of us in our age group have long since defined our own sense of style. We are not held in thrall by fad, but instead rely on the elements of good fashion, and perhaps classic tailoring, to define our working wardrobes. At no time does our sense of fashion sensibility ring truer than during times of recession.
Most of us have lived through more than one by now, and we recognize the gravity of spending our dollars wisely during these periods. When we examine our wardrobes at change of season, it is a good time to take stock of how many and what kind of clothing we really will be wearing for the next several months. While good advice at any time, during a recession it becomes even more critical to stretch that clothing budget. By sticking to what looks great on us, tried and true designs, we can invest wisely in accessories that will make our outfits look newer. Rather than buying a fancy blouse to go with our standard basic grey or black skirt for the new season, it might be wiser to invest in shoes, or a purse that takes us into contemporary times.
Speaking of skirts, have the hemlines shifted from last year? A great piece of clothing can do another year’s service by simply altering the hemline to bring it into contemporary styling. If you cannot do your own hems, ask your friends if they know a good seamstress who can. Any money you can save by not purchasing a new skirt will go a long way toward improving your budget. Another area I would like to address in this essay is hair. Because recessions are so very hard on money, trips to the hair salon cannot be as frequent. As a result, I save money by wearing styles that are easy to keep up until my hair budget improves.
Because many of us older ladies have thinning hair, an investment in a good wig is not a bad idea. Often you can find them online on sale. Just get a style that is close to what you are wearing, and you’ll be able to stretch between cuts a bit longer. These are but two of the budget conscious ideas I have used during hard times. You can still look great if you just plan how to do it.

Every season designers launch their must have looks and these stream down to our department stores eventually, while its difficult to keep one updated on every look, a few key pieces can be picked up to add to your existing wardrobe. Now doing this gets a bit more difficult if you are middle aged, a mother and budget conscious, but fear not anything is possible and you to can be a diva on a dime. I have always believed that when you reach middle age quality is more important then quantity!
Now you don’t to have a dozen jeans and LBDs in your wardrobe, if you can invest in a few good labels then do, but looking at the current economy one has to do with guilt free shopping. So the must have pieces in your wardrobe should be:
-One good pair of jeans
-One well fitted dress trousers, try places like Target, they have designers like Isaac Mizrahi with their more affordable collections for the everyday woman, the quality and fit is so much better than what you would pick at a low end department store
-An evening Black dress, why black? You can wear the same dress with just changing the accessories and it will look different and new every time
-A few basic tops and blouses
-Scarves, great to dress a plain top or blouse and will make you look chic
-Ballerina flats, for the busy mom on the go!
-A pair of Dress Shoes
-As for a daily use bag, go for something in patent leather so you can easily wipe off any spills while with the children, get a purse organizer to keep everything in a neat and more accessible manner.
-A classic clutch for an evening out. These should sum up your entire wardrobe, and every now and then when a trend comes along that you think is appropriate for you, get a piece from a lower end store and inject it into your wardrobe. Now I believe there is no such thing as age appropriate fashion, it just depends on how confident you are to carry on a trend.
A good way of getting hold of a few designer pieces on a budget is to visit consignment shops on a regular basis, trust me I have found a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes for under $30. Find private and secret sales sites online, register and you will be able to get your hands on merchandise up to 80% off at times. Also watch out for designer sample sales which usually are at the end of every season. Like I said you can be budget conscious but still a diva.
