You generally do not get to choose between a ham or turkey, so you must be patient and willing to accept what is given. Many food banks make surprise visits to families that are known to be low-income and present them with food.
Also, at the end of each cycle a food bank may have extras. This is when they start giving out “brown bags” filled with the leftover foods that did not get distributed to a pantry. Of course, these are still helpful and a great way to get food that you need. These foods are often canned, and sometimes meats are given out if there is any left over.
The important thing to remember is that food banks are generally a hub or a warehouse for other organizations that distribute food. You can ask them for food or leftovers, but there is never a solid guarantee. Be patient and remember that a food pantry is likely nearby and willing to give out food if you need it!
