I wasn’t going to post this because the terms excluded folks from class action lawsuits towards Equifax. If you weren’t aware Equifax got hacked and over 140 million social security numbers are out there in the open to be sold by hackers. However, the massive cyber security breach of Equifax is excluded officially. If you are really paranoid, credit monitoring won’t prevent anything, it just notifies you after the fact so you have to clean it up. It’s much better to do a ‘freeze’ on your credit reports as detailed here. Then nobody can take out a loan or even check your credit without you “unfreezing” your reports first. It takes a little extra work and it requires a couple bucks depending on your state but it’s the only thing you can do to effectively prevent identity theft. The credit monitoring companies that charge $20+ a month really don’t do anything for you in terms of prevention. However, this one is free so sign on up! I suggest you have both a monitoring solution (if you can get it free) and do the freeze.

How to get free credit monitoring:
- Visit the companies website by clicking “Get This Offer (External Website)”
- Hit “BEGIN ENROLLMENT” then enter the last 6 digits of your social security number and last name
- Hit “Continue” and finish the sign up process to enroll in free credit monitoring!
