5 Easy Ways to Cook Fish

Whether you’re observing Lent or just looking for some alternatives to red meat, it’s hard to find foolproof ways to cook fish. Plus deep frying or pan searing fish…well, the house doesn’t smell too great afterwards.

The recipes below are all easy and almost odor free. Plus, they work for various types of fish. So even if the recipe is for salmon, you can often substitute a similar type fish. In fact most white fish (haddock, cod, tilapia) and firmer fish like catfish or trout can easily be swapped out.

Microwaved

Microwaving fish is truly no fuss and the fish turns out moist and flaky. If the filets are unevenly sized, cut in half and place the thinner edges in the center overlapping each other so they don’t over cook or get dry. http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/882432/jewish/Microwave-Baked-Fish.htm

Oven Fried

I love deep fried fish…but not the calories, of course…so oven fried fish recipes are a pretty good substitute. Add a little extra oil to the pan and place on the lowest rack if you like a crispier crust. https://www.weightwatchers.com/food/rcp/RecipePage.aspx?recipeId=103571

Baked

Not as quick as microwaving, but still a short 20 minute wait, baked fish is perfect if you like crispy toppings or want to cook some veggies along with the fish. This is my personal favorite. http://www.food.com/recipe/simple-baked-fish-136746

Tacos

If the kids turn up their nose at the thought of fish, maybe hiding fish in a taco shell will do the trick. This recipe includes home-made salsa, but you can speed things up with a store bought jar of your favorite sauce. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/fish-tacos-recipe.html

Poached

If you like things simple, poached fish is the way to go. You can adjust the seasonings in the broth or include thinly sliced vegetables when cooking. Add a tasty sauce or eat it plain. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-lagasse/poached-fish-recipe.html
